Southern Namibia

Keetmanshoop

Keetmanshoop is the regional capital of the ǁKaras region in southern Namibia and is located about 500 kilometers south of the capital Windhoek. The place was named after the German merchant and banker Johann Keetman ("hoop" means in Afrikaans "hope") and today - together with its suburb Krönlein - has 18,900 inhabitants.

In June and July the bright yellow flowers light up, and the nectar attracts insects, birds and baboons. The quiver tree is 3 to 5 feet high and owes its name to a custom of the San to use the hollow branches as a quiver for their arrows.
