Sesriem Canyon

The Sesriem Canyon (English Sesriem Canyon) is a canyon of the Tsauchab River in Namibia.

Over a period of two million years, the Tsauchab, 80 kilometers west of its source, has eaten the Sesriem Canyon, which is about one kilometer long and up to 30 meters deep, into the sedimentary rock. He is about five million years old.

The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means six belts in German, since the first settlers of the Dorslandtrekker had to tie together six straps, which they cut from skins of oryx antelopes, in order to draw water here.

The Sesriem Canyon is only two meters wide in some places. In the further course it becomes ever flatter and broader, in order afterwards to form a flat river bed with gallery forest, which is also crossed from the slope to Sossusvlei. He is now a popular tourist destination.
