Sossusvlei

The Namib Naukluft Park directly into one of the oldest deserts in the world, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2013. The sand shimmers reddish here due to the high proportion of iron oxide. Even if you do not like to get up at 5am on holiday - the sight of the Sossusvlei dunes, bathed in red-gold light by the rising sun, is worth it. Gravel and tarred roads lead through the park. For the last five kilometers, there is a feeder service in the open 4x4 off-road vehicle in the dunes.

There you can spend the whole day and climb up to your heart's content up to 300 meters high dunes. If you stand low on the white pan, you feel like you're in the ancient amphitheater: the conversations of Americans, Germans, Australians and Italians on the top of the dune crest are as good as if they were right next to them. Once at the top, you can celebrate your ascent with a picnic. Probably but with a slight teeth grinding: Even in light winds, the desert sand like coppery icing sugar lays on bread, eggs and chicken thighs.
